Hey Mom and Dad,

So hey what's up? This week has been pretty good. We have been working hard here. We actually have a new mission schedule starting tomorrow that should hopefully help us get a lot more work done. Also President Pack is a firm believer that our mission's baptisms are going to go through the roof if we really work hard to keep the schedule and be obedient.

Also Elder Norrell and I are together once again for one more transfer, HIS LAST ONE. We are really excited and we plan on working really hard to make sure that he doesn't start slacking because his mission is ending. :) Seriously, we are going to work very hard these next 6 weeks.

This Week's Activities

Lunes el 10 - We played soccer and that's about it for Pday. Also we contacted basically the entire night and didn't have a ton of success so we were kind of discouraged. But it's only going to get better.

Martes el 11 - Today we ate at a member's house for medio dia, named Melisse. We almost always eat there on Tuesdays. It was some really good chicken and rice. Today we had a lesson with a 'potential' new investigator. His name is Axxx and he is from Ukraine. He's 16. We had our lesson with him in the chapel and like most of the other people here, we got the same excuse as always that he's catholic and he's never going to change. The only reason he gave us his phone number was so that we could play soccer together again. 

Miercoles el 12 - Today was a day of contacting. We did a lot of it. We struggled to find anyone with interest but we know we did what we were supposed to do.

Jueves el 13 - Today was a great day! We had a zone meeting in Carabanchel, a neighborhood in Madrid.

"HORSING AROUND"
We went to a member's house in Aranjuez. His name is Antonio Contreras and we ate dinner with him, his wife and two little kids that night. We ate traditional Spanish tortilla and a really good Caesar salad. While we were waiting for the food to cook he brought a plate of what looked like jamon cerrano out. We tried some and then he told us that we...[wait for it]...just ate HORSE! Haha so I can say I have eaten horse now if anyone asks! It was actually pretty good.

He actually served his mission here in Spain and he told us a bunch of really good ideas to help us contact the people here more effectively. 

Viernes el 14 - So today we contacted most of the day as well. It was a long day and we slept pretty well that night.
 

TRANSFER DAY
Sabado el 15 - So today was the day we found out transfers. We were really worried that one of us was going to be leaving this transfer. But it turns out we are staying together for one more! We are really going to be working hard this last transfer and hopefully it will help propel him into normal life and me into the mission. I am officially done being trained! So that's a plus too. I'm pretty excited to stop being called a greenie.

A Day of Unexpected Blessings
Domingo el 16 - So this week was really trying. We weren't having like any success and we were working hard, and we were struggling. But then today happened. We hadn't found a new investigator all transfer and we had been praying hardcore to just find someone that we can teach instead of just contacting. Wow, we had been praying hardcore for some blessings! Today we got them. We found 3 new investigators today. The last day of the transfer and we finally found the people we had been looking for. Wow, not the way I expected it but it did come. I know we are here for these people and we are going to help them. I love this area! 

Anyways the work is progressing here no matter how slow or how it may seem we aren't doing a lot we are getting stuff done. I know that is true. We are here to serve these people however it may be. I love the members here. I love the area itself. I love that the weather is getting nicer. I love my companion. I love my mission president.

Our district motto is "Estoy Trabajando?" Or "Am I Working?" This week we have considered this phrase many times and I know we worked this week. 

That's really cool to hear about everything back home. Great that Beth and Blair went to church and did all those fun things with you guys. That's awesome! Sam started school and did a color run, that's awesome too! So glad to hear you guys are going to be working on the bonus room while I am gone! Haha! [Dream on, buddy boy...we'll save some for you]

Wow, This is a Tough Area!

Dear Mom and Dad,

This week was awesome! I worked the hardest I have my whole mission and I didn't see very many fruits but I know that I did what I needed to this week. I really enjoyed it!

 

Wow, I can't believe Sam is already back in school it feels like the middle of summer for us here. That's awesome that Beth and Blair were there I'm sure you guys had a great time! The kitchen looks great! Like wow! Kudos to you guys!
 

So this is my last week for sure with Elder Norrell, we are going to finish training this week and then there are transfers next week so one of us or both of us might be going somewhere new, we'll just have to wait and see. 

Anyways so this past week we did a bunch of stuff, I'm going to send the same style email as I did this past week.

Monday el 3 - we went to Parque sur and I bought my Spain stuff. Afterwards we came back and contacted the whole day. Wow this area is a tough area but we are going to leave it better than we found it. 

Tuesday el 4 - today we had a lot of fails, almost all of our lessons failed on us today. But, we still accomplished a lot. Right now we are passing by every member that we can even the really inactives and trying to help them come back. It's been tough work. But, we are getting stuff done.

Wednesday el 5 - Today we had district meeting in Toledo. I was assigned a short devotional on diligence. I will attach the outline I made [see bottom of blog post]. After we made chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with gravy with Dr. Pepper. Talk about an American meal! Then Elder Jones (ZL) came with me back to Aranjuez and we had an intercambio. He's been out for about a year now and I learned a lot from him. We stayed up pretty late talking.

Thursday el 6 - we switched back in the morning to our normal companions from the intercambios. Today was a really good day. I was worried that I was never gonna get to the point where I feel good about the work I am doing - but today changed that, and we worked really hard. We are making a goal to make this last week together for sure our best week together in ways of obedience and work ethic.

Friday el 7 - today we worked so hard the entire day. We contacted everyone we saw and we really tried hard. We didn't really get any real tangible results but afterwards we both felt really good about it. It's hard sometimes to serve in the area we do and here about the success all the others are having and we are kinda in a butt area but we still are working hard and just trying to enjoy it. We're in Spain for goodness sakes. We might as well enjoy it while we are here, I'm probably never going to live here again so this is an opportunity of a lifetime. 

Saturday el 8 - Today was Elder Norrell's birthday. We had a really good time and the members totally spoiled us. It was a really fun day. I sent pictures and videos.

Sunday el 9 - Today we had church and then branch counsel. During branch counsel President Ovejero kind of called out the members in our branch for not helping us as much as they should. It was kinda cool because we hadn't even talked to him about it. He is a really good guy and hopefully we'll get some help now. 

Monday el 10 - Today we went to E Leclerc, a mall here in Aranjuez. I bought some Futbol shoes for super cheap because of the sales they have going right now. We are writing email right now and then going to play once again. It will be a lot of fun.

So because I'm with the district leader he has to go on intercambios every transfer with one of the Elders in each of the companionships which means I go with the other. Also it means we go on intercambios with the ZL's which is awesome because they are such good leaders. I'm really starting to love the work here.

Going On Exchanges (intercabios)

Hey Mom And Dad,

 

So things are going well here in Aranjuez. We have been really working a lot through the Area book and visiting less active families. We have a ton of those here! It's sad to see how many people have fallen away from the church here. I love Spain! But the culture here is so different from that of the United States. And Satan has a very strong hold on the people here. 

We are probably going to make my birthday cake for Elder Norrell's birthday. I have not made it yet. Today we went to mall called Parque Sur (South Park) in English. Haha! I bought some Spain clothes.

Well Elder Koeven and I went to a less active family (on intercambios - exchanges) last week and they were just really touched by the Spirit while we were there. It was a pretty spiritual experience all together. We also had some success in contacting which doesn't happen that often so, it was really cool.
 

Wow the dining room looks great! Like holy cow! I can't wait to see what the kitchen looks like! Sorry about the clothes, I'm a creature of habit. Haha! 

We have a lot of work cut out for us. In the next 2 weeks is all I for sure have left with Elder Norrell so we are really going to try and push it. We are really starting to get into stride though. 

 

I'm going to write a little bit about every day.  

Monday el 27 - We played soccer for P-day with a member named Manu and his 2 non-member brothers in law. It was a lot of fun. They are super good at soccer. 

Tuesday el 28 - Today was mainly a day of contacting and stuff like that. We had a lesson with a recent convert named Ginger. It was her son who I baptized. We're still working on getting the pics from then. Side note almost all the people we meet with are not from Spain! Almost all of the members here are Latinos. 

Wednesday el 29 - Today we had District meeting in Toledo, which is always really good but this week it was special. There's a guy living here who just got off his mission in Georgia like 6 months ago, and he's here doing a medical residency. His name is Zander Smith, he is super cool. He was just a really good example of taking your mission home with you and still being a good guy. But he taught a little devotional and the Spirit was really strong, it was a really fun experience. After that we went to a pueblo called Sesena. We went there to do area book work and it seemed to be pretty fruitful. We had one guy who we are hopefully meeting with tonight tell us to come back so it was pretty great.

Thursday el 30 - Today we had weekly planning and it was good. After that we ate at a members store here that we call la tienda. (The store) then we went to our pueblo Valdemoro and we contacted the entire night. It was a super long day because we actually walked like the entire city and wow! That city is huge! 

Friday el 31 - Today we had intercambios once again. This time I was put with an Elder whose name is Elder Sarongo. He's from Ecuador and he doesn't speak a lick of English. I was super worried about this day. But, wow! I know a lot more Spanish than i thought! We stayed up until almost 2:30 talking to each other, all in Spanish! It's a huge blessing that I can recognize like everyday that my Spanish really is improving. It's such an amazing blessing. There's an Elder in my district whose been out for a year and he's still really struggling with the language. But the intercambio was great, I went to a city called Talevera and it was really cool. Their piso (apartment) was huge! We had a really spiritual lesson with an investigator from Romania. It was a great experience.

Saturday el 1 - today was a pretty rough day. We didn't have very much success and we were both pretty beat. But we pushed through and just did what we had to. Luckily Sunday was the next day.

Sunday el 2 - Today was AWESOME! We had fast and testimony meeting. There was a sister named Rocio who bore her testimony yesterday for the first time in 9 years. She's been inactive and we've been visiting her a lot! And yesterday we saw some fruit! Wow! It was amazing! When she bore her testimony the Spirit was so strong. The room went silent and wow! It was great! Today we also knocked doors which isn't my favorite thing but it was cool. 

Anyways there is a run down of the past week. This week we have a goal to be exactly obedient to every rule and point in the white handbook. We are kinda gonna be crazy about it. Hopefully it will help us to see more fruit!
 

Dad - Papa la huancaina is the BOMB! Wow, I loved it! Lots of the members here are from the Lima area and they really are great people.

We've Got a Lot of Work to Do!

Crazy Companions - Read on...

What a week!

 

Spain is going good. Today for PDay we are chilling and then going to play soccer later. We already cleaned up our piso. So this week I got to do intercambios (missionary exchanges) with Elder Koeven who is one of the Zone leaders. That was a lot of fun and we had some pretty awesome experiences.

 

Looks like NC was a lot of fun. Wow those kids look they are getting old. That's really crazy for me. I feel like I'm getting super old. Haha. [Here are some photos we sent to him.]

So I think our calling in this area is to re-activate people. When I first got here Elder Norrell said that he only knew of 4 families that live in our town. We found a map of Aranjuez with where all the members live and we have 38 families in this town alone! Wow! We've got a lot of work to do! The rescue is our calling in this branch. Something that is cool though is that Aranjuez might be made into a Ward! Yes! Already since we've been here our average attendance has gone from 50 to almost 90 every week. We've done some of that and we hope to keep helping this area improve.

So Dad, I've had a lot of really cool stuff happen this week. I tried papa la wanc hayena(?). Sorry I don't know how to spell it. Haha! Also I found out that there's like a ton of Peruvians here in our beach that I had never talked to before. Do you remember any Napas or Castillas? I actually somebody from Peru like every day here. It's pretty cool. 

 

In other news, no we aren't really teaching anybody right now. Our one investigator, Txxx, moved to England. And now we contact while at the same time reaching out to less actives. Also we do a lot of Area book work.
 

My testimony gets strengthened a lot because so often we are challenged by people on what we believe. The people here claim to be Catholic but so many of them don't even believe in God, it's tough here. I never thought it would be so hard. But it's Europe, and it's Spain. Apparently this mission is like top 5 hardest right now. I'm really enjoying it though, I just try my absolute hardest to stay positive.  We just try to be happy and keep moving.

Wow, Sam goes back to school pretty quick here. That's awesome Beth and Blair are coming over, that will be a lot of fun! Wish I could be there for all this cool stuff.

[To Sam:] ...And dude, you would not believe how much Spanish I understand now. Wow, it's crazy! I feel like I have been super blessed by God to understand the people. It's pretty awesome!

TN Connection and Meeting Connor

Dad - I don't need a second pair of shoes. Plus now that my feet are recovering I can start to wear my other shoes as well. Dad, you would not believe how many Peruvians I get to see here. We are actually going to teach a couple from Peru tonight. They are already members but it's super cool how many people from Peru I know. It's always a conversation starter. Um, the food thing is just interesting. The food is alright, and most days my stomach is fine but, then, other days...

TENNESSEE CONNECTION IN SPAIN
President Pack is really awesome! Like, wow! I already love him more than I loved President Jackson. For zone conference we left from Aranjuez at about 8 and got to Pavones (where the Temple is) at about 9:15. We were there until almost 6 and I did get a personal interview with President Pack. He's a really nice guy and he basically just got to know me. We talked about home and life before the mission and he actually knows Trip Meredith. He's the one who told him to call and tell the Authorities that he could be a mission president if they needed him to. And now he's here. So I'm grateful.

His Birthday Package
So I did indeed get my package this past week at the zone conference. I also received all the birthday cards and such on the same day. I got 9 letters and my package and all the other missionaries were super jelly. Haha. I really enjoyed what I got including the food and also the tie clip. I've already gotten a lot of compliments on it. I've shared my Reese's pieces with some Spanish 'heathens' here that have never had them before and they beg for more like everyday. Haha!

The members here are super awesome and I am still waiting for more photos from the baptism so I don't have those today. Um the baptism was really cool. I was able to do my first one so that was awesome. We had like 40 people there so it was pretty well attended and other than that Elder Norrell spoke at it.

So details about the zone conference...we learned about who the Packs were and we got to meet them and their children. They talked a lot about who they are and I feel like we got to know them pretty well. Also they spoke on obedience, and being true to the missionary handbook. We were challenged to read the talk "Swallowed up in the will of the Father" by Neal A. Maxwell. I really enjoyed the conference and we are really trying to work as hard as we can to be super obedient.

That's great to hear how well everything is going at the house. Wow that's quite a bit of progress you guys have made. I'm gonna come home to a different house, awww. It's definitely gonna be cool for you guys to go see Chris and Nath and the Fam. We always talk about family. Like every day with members or just with each other so I hope you guys have a great time. By the way the picture book is AWESOME! I seriously love it.

Wow Mason's [Wheeler] parents are already moving to a different place, that's wild. You guys better not move while I'm gone. I've got way to many friends at home for me to go somewhere else. Mom, I'm really happy to hear that your school stuff is going well. That's really awesome that you will have graduated by the time I get home!

So about Elder Farmer, I was able to hang out with him on last pday and we played soccer for pday. When you ask what we do for pday it's really not anything special, we buy groceries and chill and play soccer most of the time that's why I don't talk about it a ton we usually do the same thing. I saw Elder Escobar at the Zone Conference and it was really cool, I miss my a good buddy. He is getting a lot better at the language, Elder Farmer on the other hand is a work in progress. Haha We are all really improving though.
 

My feet are better now so I don't need any new shoes, also again, I really love the package.

Cool story of the week: This week on Saturday we had a dance in the chapel. A member picked up a hitchhiker in a pueblo close to here and brought him to the dance. The hitchhiker's name was Connor Simpson, he's from Canada and he's actually backpacking all through Europe for the next 3 months. He got stuck and needed a ride here so he could get a bus to Madrid and so he could move on with his trip. Well turns out he doesn't speak any Spanish so he was in a little bit of trouble trying to figure out what he was going to do. Anyways we helped him find a bus and we chilled with him for a while that night. It may not have been the most useful way to use our time but I think it was the Christ-like thing to do. He's a member of a funky religion called Baha'i or something like that and he didn't have a very good take on the LDS church before we talked to him. But I know after all we did to help him his opinion was changed. He even told us, "what i had expected was you would show me the bus station and that would be all, but you guys took me in and fed me and introduced me to a lot of cool people. For that I will always be grateful. But even more you guys made sure I had a bus ticket to where I needed to go and then you bought it for me. That's the nicest thing any stranger has ever done for me. Your church does teach some good things about service and I know that now."

But anyway, he had really good values for a young guy in these times, no drugs, no alcohol, no sex. It's not very often we find young men like that outside the church. I think we planted a seed with him and we pray that it can grow while he is continuing his trip. I'm attaching a photo.

I love Spain! I love the people although they are difficult, I love my family, I pray for you guys a lot. Can't wait to talk to you next week [I think he just means by email, or there's a phone call I didn't know about].

Happy Birthday, Elder Harris!

Elder Harris turned 19 last Wednesday. He had a great birthday celebration with one of the families they are teaching, and they made him a homemade dinner, dessert with candles, and gave him a box of chocolates!

"My birthday was pretty fun. We ate with a member named Ginger, whose son I baptized this past Friday. We ate chicken and rice and beans. Chicken and rice is probably 90% of what we eat here. They were super cool and they gave me a box of chocolates for my birthday so that was really nice. The members here are really awesome. They make it so worth it to be here and go through all the crap that we have to have on a regular basis. We are really enjoying our time here, me and Elder Norrell get along like brothers so... HAHA!"

"For my birthday, I treated myself to a haircut, and some European clothes."

 

 

 

"I should be getting my package this Friday when I go to the Zone conference in Pavones to meet President Pack. I'm excited for it! I'm excited to get to meet him. Also it was a treat getting to hang with Elder Farmer today! It's cool seeing my friends from the MTC and seeing how much they have progressed since we last saw each other."

"This Friday I get to see my best bud from the MTC though, Elder Escobar. He's been in a town called Cuenca which is pretty far away from the rest of the missionaries so he hasn't exactly been able to come back and say hey at all yet. 

 

I sent a letter home for Colton and Grandma. It should get there in about a week or two. If you could please forward there's to them that would be great. There's a treat in there for my Fam too so I hope you like it.
 

That's cray that you guys are almost done with the house. I'm going to come home to a different world haha! It's going to be weird for me definitely.
 

Haha mom! I'm not going to prison okay? It's weird that you always go there. But I know it's part of your work. There's some people here that I wouldn't mind seeing in prison though. haha"

 

"Please be sure to tell all those that ask about me that I love them. I really can feel the boost of daily prayers. Some days here are really tough but we are pushing through.
 

Haha Aaron [Hart] has 2 more daughters?! Haha! That is so funny! I'm so happy for him and Ginger Dunham though! How's Blake [Scott] doing? I haven't talked to him at all since I have been here. 

Wow!, no sunburns for Sam on a trip where he is in the sun all day? What did they do differently?! That's great that he is getting so much of scouts done now I wish I could have been that way. I'm so happy that he gets to go to EFY this week. I really think own t to be an EFY counselor when I get back. My counsellors helped me stay in the church and if I can help anyone else feel the same things I did I definitely want to do so. Here in Spain they have EFY but it is every other year, so you can't go as often as I did. I tell all the youth in our branch that if they can they need to go to EFY because it changed my life and I'm sure it can change theirs. 

Well anyways I'll have some photos of the baptism next week. And I will share them then. All is well here. Usually I have enough money to buy groceries and such. Usually I take out a little bit extra every time I go to the ATM for emergencies from my personal account.
 

One birthday wish I have is if there is someway I can get probably somewhere close to 200$. I found the sword! It's the Sword of Captain Moroni! It's super sweet and it's made in Toledo with the best Steel in the world! It costs 85€ but I have to pay to have it shipped to you guys and I don't know how much that will cost. So that's why i say 200$. If there's anyway that could be possible that would be great but if not right now I can wait until later in my mission."

"Dad - the food here is pretty bad. I get sick like once a week. My companion says its just because I am new and I agree but really the food is gross...so we just bless it and eat it. Haha! But I am enjoying the whole experience! Everyday there is something new and the people are just always surprisingly rude so I'm really loving it. We just try to stay positive and move on! 

Anyways I love you guys so much! I have a new favorite scripture that applies to missionaries in my opinion it is Alma 53:20-21. It's about the Strippling warriors and I absolutely love it!"
